Planet Fitness Workout routine

I know what you’re probably thinking right now:
“Hey, this isn’t Reddit! What the heck is going on here?!”

Yes, you are 100% correct – this isn’t Reddit.

However, I think you’ll really enjoy this article, as it’s all about answering questions from Reddit, regarding Planet Fitness.

Here’s what’s going on:

I’ve spent hours reading the r/fitness Reddits and sub-Reddits about Planet Fitness. As it seems, there are a lot of questions that get asked, but that don’t really get answered. Or, the answers aren’t really that helpful.

I think that’s kind of a problem. Don’t you?

Anyway, in this article I’ve taken some of the most frequently asked workout questions from Reddit, regarding Planet Fitness, and provided my own (hopefully) helpful answers to them.

I like to think of this article as a compilation of the best Reddit questions about Planet Fitness workouts, and helpful answers to all of them.

In this article we’ll talk about:

  • Working with Planet Fitness trainers
  • Planet Fitness free weight workout routines
  • Planet Fitness weight machine workout routines

And much more…

Please feel free to read this article top to bottom, or simply just skip to the questions/answers that you’re most interested in reading.

I hope you find this article helpful.

Alright, let’s begin.

Q. I’m new to working out and really nervous about it. Why should I choose Planet Fitness as my gym?

It’s totally normal to feel nervous about starting to workout. Planet Fitness prides itself on being the “no judgement gym”. They’ve specifically built their entire empire around helping people feel comfortable at the gym.

Ok, so a few reasons why you should join Planet Fitness as your first gym:

  • Cheap memberships → A monthly membership is only $10 per month, so you won’t break the bank paying for an expensive gym membership.
  • Huge equipment selection → All PF gyms come fully loaded with tons of cardio machines, weight machines, free weights, and stretching areas. You’ll be hard pressed to find a gym with more equipment.
  • Judgement free zone → Besides from the cheap membership, one of the biggest appeals of PF is the judgement free atmosphere they create. This is the perfect environment for beginners to comfortably get started working out, without having to worry about people judging them. Total life win.

Q. Should I work with a Planet Fitness Trainer?

Personal trainer

Working with a trainer is a great idea – especially if you’re a little unsure about what to do. The trainers at PF aren’t especially aggressive, because they’re specifically told not to be.

Now, some people may view their easy going approach as a bad thing.

However, for folks just getting started working out, this is honestly a great approach, which builds confidence and trust. The trainers at PF will help you build confidence in the gym, so you can get a great workout without wondering just what the heck to do every time you walk in the door.

To my knowledge appoints with Planet Fitness personal trainers are free.

You can set them up simply by asking the front desk staff to set you up for your first personal training session.

If you want a customized workout plan ask the front desk to set you up for a “design your own program” session.

Or, if you’d rather just get the lay of the land, you can have one of the trainers walk you around the gym and show you how to use all the equipment.

This is another great option for building confidence in the gym.

Q. Does Planet Fitness have barbells and squat racks?

No, to my knowledge it’s corporate mandated that PF gyms do NOT carry squat racks or barbells.

They have weight machines, cardio machines, dumbbells up to 75lbs, and smith machines, and area for core and stretching.

Q. I don’t feel comfortable working out with free weights yet – What weight machine workout routine do you recommend for beginners?

Planet Fitness Workout routine

If you’re new to working out it’s totally normal to feel a little lost.

You may even be thinking:

I have no idea what I’m doing. The other day I did 10 minutes on the elliptical, and even randomly picked a few machines to experiment with – I did that machine where you pull levers back while sitting, but I don’t even know the name of it…

Don’t worry my friend. I’ve got you covered.

The good news is that you get a fantastic workout simply by using weight machines.

In the beginning, I like to recommend that folks start with a 3-day per week routine. Of course, you can do more than this, but 3 days seems like a reasonable place for most people to start.

Following the 3-day per week workout advice, listed below is a sample total body weight machine workout plan, which you start using today.

Quick note: Contrary to what you may read on the r/fitness Reddit forums, you definitely don’t need to be doing 10+ exercises per workout. Some of the workouts I see posted online, especially for beginners, make me cringe because they are recommending like 10-15 exercises per workout. There may be a time and place for those workouts, but when you’re just starting out keep things simple and focus on consistency first.

Day 1 – Lower body strength

(1)
Three rounds of:
10 leg press
Rest 60 seconds between rounds

(2)
Three rounds of:
10 hamstring curl
Rest 60 seconds between rounds

(3)
Three rounds of:
10 leg extensions
Rest 60 seconds between rounds

(4)
10 minutes on the stair climber

Day 2- Upper body strength

(1)
Three rounds of:
8 lat pull down
Rest 60 seconds between rounds

(2)
Three rounds of:
8 shoulder press machine
Rest 60 seconds between rounds

(3)
Three rounds of:
8 row machine
Rest 60 seconds between rounds

(4)
Three rounds of:
Maximum effort plank hold
Rest 60 seconds between efforts

Day 3- Full body circuit

(1)
Three rounds of:
30 seconds of non-stop leg press
30 seconds of non-stop row
30 seconds of non-stop hamstring curl
30 seconds of non-stop bicep curl
Transition quickly to the next machine

Rest 1-2 minutes in between rounds

(2)
10 minutes on the stair climber

Again, this is sample 3-day per week weight machine workout for beginners. If you’ve been working out for a while please feel free to add a 4th or even 5th day.

And, if you feel totally comfortable with the weight machines and are looking to take your workouts to the next level, check out the next section all about free weight workouts.

Q. I already feel comfortable using free weights – What full body free weight workout routine can I do at Planet Fitness?

If you already feel comfortable using free weights then this is the section for you.

Remember, Planet Fitness gyms don’t offer barbells, or squat racks, but they do have a selection of dumbbells, and sometimes fixed weight bars you can use.

This is more than enough equipment to get started crushing full body free weight workouts.

Just like in the weight machine section, I suggest that you start with a 3-day per week dumbbell workout. There are many ways to set this up, but I like to use a lower body day, upper body day, and full body day.

Listed below is 3-day dumbbell workout you should be able to do at any PF gym:

Day 1- Lower body strength

(1)
Three rounds of:
10 goblet squats
5 jump squats
Rest 60 seconds between rounds

(2)
Three rounds of:
10 stiff leg deadlift
Rest 60 seconds between rounds

(3)
Three rounds of:
10 weighted walking lunges (5 per leg)
4 jump lunges (2 per leg)
Rest 60 seconds between rounds

(4)
10 minutes on the stair climber

Day 2- Upper body strength

(1)
Three rounds of:
8 overhead presses
Rest 60 seconds between rounds

(2)
Three rounds of:
6 single arm row (per arm)
6 single arm dumbbell bench press (per arm)
Rest 60 seconds between rounds

(3)
Three rounds of:
5 single arm curl (per arm)
30 seconds of max pushups
Rest 60 seconds between rounds

Day 3- Total body strength

(1)
Three rounds of:
8 dumbbell deadlift
30 second plank hold
Rest 60 seconds between rounds

(2)
Three rounds of:
10 weighted walking lunges (5 per leg)
6 overhead press
Rest 60 seconds between rounds

(3)
Three rounds of:
30 second single arm farmers carry
6 burpees
Rest 60 seconds between rounds

(4)
10 minutes on the stair climber

Again this is just a sample total body free weight routine that you can do with the dumbbells at Planet Fitness. However, don’t be fooled – this is not an easy routine by any stretch of the imagination.

Q. What are the best cardio machines to use at Planet Fitness?

Best cardio machines

Planet Fitness gyms offer a lot of cardio machine options. However, I like to keep things simple and mostly recommend the following “big 3” cardio machines:

  • Elliptical
  • Treadmill
  • Stair climber

Here’s why:

The elliptical is a great way to add very low impact cardio into your workout routine. Using the elliptical is very easy on the knees and hips, and can definitely get the heart rate going. To make your next elliptical workout harder increase the resistance level to an 6+.

The treadmill is great for jogging, but also because you set it to an incline for hill walking/running. Walking up a hill is a hard work. Running up a hill is really hard work. Next time you’re on the treadmill set the incline to 3+% and notice the difference in how your legs and lungs feel. They will love it after (but probably hate it during).

The stair climber is awesome because it’s just plain hard, but also very easy on the knees and hips. Think about – climbing up a flight of stairs is hard work, right? Of course it is. Spending 10-15 minutes on the stair climber is one of the best ways to get a super sweat going, without all the pounding of actually walking up a normal flight of stairs.

There may be other cardio machine options, but these are the 3 I generally like to recommend at first.

Of course, if you want to explore more of the options ask one of th PF personal trainers to help you out. That’s what they’re there for.
